Harmony in a home - that is exactly what the owners of MH House wanted to build for their family of seven. A liveable, welcoming space that balances function and form. In response, their semi-detached house was opened up to invite natural light into what was originally an odd and narrow floor plan.‍The home exudes simplicity and subtle sophistication through its deliberate use of materials, texture and clean lines. It is crafted but not delicate – with the austerity of simple white walls, light grey stone, oak timber and black metal details melding harmoniously with the warmth of the lush courtyard, alive with tropical greenery and a water feature.‍

The space, doubling as a commercial sales gallery as well as an event space, needed to be stylish yet inviting – like an urban hotel lobby. As such, the Danish concept of Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”) – which encompasses a feeling of cosy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life – was implemented. The space was designed with contemporary aesthetics – clean repetitive lines and verticality placed elements that enhance the height of the space. ‍Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow an abundance of natural light to pour into the space during the day while curated lighting gives the space a cosy ambience in the evening. Materials of oak timber, black metal, grey marble, and soft beige surfaces give a consistent neutral colour palette that runs through the space. This evokes a cosy and stress-free environment where communication and negotiations can flow uninterrupted.

A calming space to unwind after a long workday was a priority for the owner of FS Home. Despite the apartment’s small footprint, a comfortable, functional, and contemporary home was created to fit the couple’s needs without compromising design and form. Storage space and organisation is essential to the couple, so an EDC (Every Day Carry) storage unit was created on the right side in the kitchen. The kitchen cabinets, mobile kitchen island and mobile coffee table also offer additional workspace through expandable parts. ‍A sliding glass door between the kitchen and the living hall optimises air-conditioning circulation and prevents odours from the kitchen from permeating throughout the house. Oak timber laminate flooring and warm colour palettes give the home a warm feeling while its minimalist design and uncluttered spaces give the owners their dream space to relax.

Tropical paradise meets modernity at JT House. To emphasise its raw beauty, natural materials like travertine, terrazzo and oak timber were widely used throughout the home. The main living space features an open floor plan surrounded by lush private gardens which serves as the setting for entertaining guests. As such, owners and guests can mingle without feeling constrained. ‍The large living space with floor to ceiling windows open up to let natural ventilation and sunlight into the space, adding to its South East Asian sensibilities. The raw rigidity in the space is broken up by soft shapes and materials in the furniture as well as a spiral staircase on the first floor that traverses up into the private living space on the second floor.

An elegant blend of 1920s art deco influences meets tropical accents in this restaurant and café. Geometric shapes, smooth lines, stream-lined forms and colours that are bright and cheerful create a timeless yet sophisticated ambience. Contrasting hues of tropical greens are choreographed to blend harmoniously with bold monochrome tones as well as a softer colour palette for a more distinctive look while maintaining a balance of cold and warm. ‍A generous use of mirrors reflect the lush greenery, and together with wooden furniture, gives a more natural feel, enhancing the tropical vibes. Black and white wooden blinds reminisce of old Malaya, invoking feelings of nostalgia.

Spending more time at home due to the pandemic, the client desired an intimate and calm home with Asian sensibilities that celebrates their heritage. Taking inspiration from the traditional Korean house, hanok, natural elements such as pale oak timber, custom paper lanterns and lattice timber doors were introduced into the 3000sqft condominium unit. ‍Combined with geometric clean lines, warm lighting and consistent natural colours, the home successfully marries modern and traditional, serving as the perfect backdrop to display the client’s oriental furniture and art collection. Plants are thoughtfully placed throughout the home, breaking up its neutral palette with a pop of green that breathes life and into the space.

The owners of SP House sought to shed its conventional “boxy” design and cold appearance. Hence, it was reinvented as a tropical sanctuary, featuring an abundance of local, vernacular materials and details including aged timber finish, wicker, terracotta flooring, teakwood and rattan furniture that has turned it into a resort-inspired, cosy home.‍The landscape is curated to provide privacy and natural soundproofing from the outside. Tall dense trees canopying and barricading the private swimming pool area. A dramatic curved ceiling in the entrance foyer invites visitors and residents into the home, and towards the main living space. The open floor plan adds to the streamlined look and directs the gaze towards views of Gunung Jerai afforded by the windows.

The client wanted to revamp her 20-year-old condominium unit with a modern Parisian aesthetic while maintaining certain classical elements from the original interior. Designed to create harmony between bourgeois opulence and chic contemporary design, BC5 House features clean lines and a natural and muted colour palette over modern and sleek furniture. ‍The open plan living space was maintained together with the original chengal wood panelling, while a custom built stainless steel cabinet that reminded the client of her years in culinary school was added. An 8m length sliding timber lattice was also included, providing a choice between intimacy or openness in the main living area.

The tight, confined watch gallery is transformed into an art deco-inspired contemporary retail space through the use of elegant, dark washed timber. Divided into three wings, the brass metal archway provides a visual break in the dark masculine space while guiding customers through the store. The main display island brings to life the anatomy of a classic watch - clad in a jade marble top, with genuine leather wrapped around the body and delicate brass details. ‍The watches and straps are showcased in display boxes, designed to carefully highlight the delicate details of the high-end watches in an impactful yet minimalistic way. Dedicated for private clients, the right wing features graceful, organic-shaped elements such as bespoke furniture and a water feature designed by EndoHome to provide intimacy and luxury.

Surrounded by luscious tropical greeneries and with luxurious high ceilings, this “resort” like family home in Tropicana Heights, Kajang, is perfect for an everyday retreat.‍One of the main features of the house includes the “open-plan” living room, dry kitchen and dining room trio which are grouped together in a singular large, double volume space, overlooking the surrounding landscape. The high ceilings allow abundance of light and ventilation into the area, creating the perfect, private, everyday getaway.‍The use of wooden joineries, soft beige tones and muted shades in the master suite creates a warm ambience for a hotel-like experience.

The goal of this project was to a create a cosy space where the family of six could spend quality time together as well as host extended family members and friends. Located on the top of a hill and close to a reserved forest, the bungalow was designed to strengthen family bonds while enjoying nature. ‍Which is why at the heart of the home lies the riad – an enclosed courtyard with lush greenery that serves as the hub for social activity. Through high ceilings, vintage furniture and lighting, white marble and panelling, and a private veranda, the Riad House intertwines contemporary yet timeless design with the old world charms of colonial architecture.

This modern contemporary workspace aims to provide its users with both a space to work in as well as a space to relax and feel connected with each other. The open plan layout features generous flowing interior spaces wrapped in swathes of glass that provide privacy while maintaining visual connection, making it eye-catching but also functional. The muted grey walls, dark steel elements, exposed ceiling soffit and natural wood veneer details provide an edgy industrial theme to the office. ‍A steel spiral staircase with wood panelling wraps around the reception counter, breaking the monotonous, angular design of the rest of the space. The wooden flooring at the reception area is abruptly interrupted by a line of epoxy demarcating the passageway towards the meeting room and lounge area. Large window openings with a thin profile of mild steel frame run throughout the office to maximise the use of natural light.

This villa marries contemporary design with Malay culture and tropical panache. Details from traditional kampung houses such as exposed wooden rafters, timber screens and panels, as well as rattan and teakwood furniture are redefined with edgy elements such as crisp lines, simple shapes and muted colours. ‍The client’s private collection of reclaimed railway sleepers become the main feature of the house, especially in the formal dining area. The sculptural rattan light illuminates the rustic character of the oxidised iron and aged timber finishing, creating a juxtaposition of industrial and natural. The kitchen and casual dining area – the heart of the home – is airy, spacious and well-lit making it the perfect place to gather and converse. This combination of linear compositions, high volume open spaces, dramatic lighting and natural materials creates a one-of-a-kind tropical hospitality.

The clients, a retired couple, were looking for a way to transform their 1000sqft apartment into a home away from home that allows them to indulge in their hobbies. Despite its small footprint, the apartment feels spacious and cosy with minimalist design utilised throughout – clean lines combined with a muted and natural material palette such as oak timber flooring and beige-coloured contemporary furniture. ‍Timber lattice panelling at the entrance as well as handleless hidden doors, panelling and storage gives the space a sleek, contemporary appearance – turning the weekend home into a small space with big impact.

This two-storey landed house was designed with practicality and comfort in mind to suit the client’s lifestyle. With low ceilings and a compact footprint, the goal was to maximise the quality of the space and cater to a family of three. The existing walls were demolished and replaced with glass blocks to create an open floor plan. ‍This also allows natural light in while maintaining privacy and adds a touch of nostalgia to warm the space. Wood materials combined with a nude, earthy colour palette and a sprinkling of plants throughout the home gives the owners a cosy, welcoming space to unwind after a long day.

The store is designed to be spacious and flexible, suitable for the fashion brand to host regular events and fashion shows. A considered palette of pastel hues and cream grey was applied throughout the interior to bring out the concept of minimal luxury. This soft, subtle colour scheme is used abundantly throughout the space on the floors, walls, and ceilings, creating a clean backdrop for the products and clothes to really stand out. ‍In harmony with this, the soft chamfered edging on the furniture finishings complements the soft and feminine design of the store. Comfortable, cosy nooks are created throughout the store where customers can try products on, further enhancing the in-store shopping experience, making it more personalised and enjoyable.

Taking inspiration from the owner’s love of tropical rainforests, natural materials such as teak wood, rattan and stone were implemented throughout the home and paired with neutral tones. For a modern feel, an open plan living hall decorated with bespoke contemporary furniture, custom pendant lamps and marble accents were used. ‍Large windows allow natural light in, offering an unbroken view into the garden and pool area. Greenery imbues the house, both inside and out – further bringing to life the home’s tropical design. Some of the property’s highlights include the state-of-the-art pool area and the master bathroom, featuring an open roof indoor garden that bridges the interior and exterior landscape.

The design behind AB Terrace is driven by the client’s desire to live in an open plan house whilst maintaining privacy. However, the existing linear layout of the intermediate single storey terrace house did not facilitate good cross ventilation and is poorly illuminated internally. An extra floor was added on top, to allow for a rearrangement of spaces. ‍Three separate green zones were strategically placed throughout the home, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Additional screens, doors and a skylight were introduced to create ambiguity between privacy and openness while allowing natural light to illuminate the home and a natural breeze to keep it cool.

Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of city life lies a cosy, tropical resort home. With its light timber-framed structure, vernacular roof and subtle use of louvered windows, the house is heavily influenced by the gradually disappearing features of the traditional rumah kampung. Ample apertures introduce natural light and ventilation into the home, creating openness and a sense of unified indoor and outdoor. ‍This seamless transition is further enhanced through the use of natural, earthy materials such as handmade terracotta and ceramic tiles, balau timber and rattan; as well as a series of bifold doors that blur the line between inside and outside. Combined with an open floor plan in the living area, it makes for the perfect space for lively gatherings with friends or even quiet, cosy, rainy days with the family.

Client sought to transform a compact living space into a cozy home with ample storage. “The Library House” has storage areas and multipurpose furniture such as a convertible coffee table that extends into a dining or worktable was incorporated. ‍Light, neutral tones and timber furnishings create a seamless silhouette that broadens the space and creates an inviting, warm ambience. Captivating and cosy reading nooks were created throughout the home, to provide the client with relaxing spaces to indulge in their love of reading.

Beach Pool Club consists of a pool area, common lounge, event space, bar, and restaurant. It evokes a rustic tropical vibe by combining tropical rainforest and coastal elements over raw, earthy materials. The brevity of materials allows the space to breathe, giving it a sophisticated aesthetic. ‍Yet there are interesting textures and details – mainly concrete, rattan and timber – chosen for their easy maintenance and their natural cooling properties. Coupled with an abundance of indoor plants and a subtle colour palette of turquoise, blue and green; the space feels luxurious, welcoming, and relaxing – a place where guests can dine, wine, and socialise.

DSS Residence addresses one of the more ubiquitous challenges of building a family home – having personal spaces that preserve privacy for each family member, while simultaneously allowing them to connect with one another as well as host guests. By introducing contemporary elements and cues from Rajput architecture, the home imbues old world charm that becomes the backdrop for the client’s collection of antique ornaments and furniture, collected from their travels all over the world. ‍Bespoke lighting, earthy colour palettes and contemporary furniture creates a resort-style atmosphere. The main living spaces utilise pivot doors and sliding doors to open or separate spaces depending on the needs of the family and also allows them to keep clutter out of sight while entertaining.

Professionals and millennials – that is the key clientele at Rage. This 2000sqft coffee shop focuses on delivering a good brew within an intimate, communal layout that encourages socialising and interaction. The main materials used are honest and natural, such as ventilation blocks, polished concrete, metal frames, corrugated sheets, and layered plywood. ‍The 10ft long coffee bar gives the baristas a “stage” to demonstrate their skills and interact with customers. This hip coffee shop also accommodates various events with its convertible seating and lighting. The #RAGEroom at the back of the space features bold pink corrugated sheets, neon signage, bean bags and a punching bag – perfect for hanging out and of course, selfies.
